Queer as Comics Exhibit Opens in London

The Quentin Blake Centre for Illustration will host a first of its kind exhibit called “Queer as Comics” showcasing “strip cartoons, graphic novels and zines that have represented LGBTQIA+ perspectives since the 1940s.”

The exhibit includes the artwork of Alison Bechdel, Kate Charlesworth, Jason Chuang, Burton Clarke, Howard Cruse, Leo Fox, Diana Green, Roberta Gregory, Rachael House, Tove Jansson, Rupert Kinnard, Lee Lai, Dave Richards, Tom Robinson, Ariel Schrag, David Shenton, Sina Sparrow, Tobias Tak, Tom of Finland, Anna Trench, and Mary Wings.

From their exhibition website:

Queer as Comics traces comics, strip cartoons, graphic novels and zines that have represented LGBTQIA+ perspectives since the 1940s. From the UK’s first published gay comic strip and the first gay Black superhero, to the self-publishing scenes and webcomics of the present day, this is an exhibition of trailblazers.

Queer artists have used comics to share impactful stories across history, often in defiance of censorship. With most artworks shown for the first time, the exhibition chronicles how comics have acted as a voice for queer communities.

Exhibit runs mid-May through early October. Tickets will be available in April.
