2026 Stripschap Award Winner and Nominees Announced

Het Stripschap has announced nominees to their Stripschap Awards 2026. Their lifetime achievement award, the Stripschapprijs, will go to Milan Hulsing. DRAWING THE TIMES was awarded the P. Hans Frankfurtherprijs Award for service to the comic community, and the nominees for the Storyworld Publieksprijs (Storyworld Audience Award) include Margreet De Heer, Anco Dijkman (llustrator), Ahmad Resh (writer), Robbert Damen, Gerard Leever, and Aimée de Jongh.

Stripschapprijs

The lifetime achievement award will go to Milan Hulsing. Milan is a comic bookmaker, illustrator and animator. His nomination was unanimous among jurors. He’s described as “a comic artist who does not shy away from experimentation and dares to challenge himself. This results in a considerable amount of inspiring comics and illustration work.”

Over the past three decades, he has added a number of acclaimed books to his resume. All of a very high standard. Whether it concerns his debut Wat Fred niet wist en andere verhalen or Voetsporen, published last year, they are beautifully designed and original narratives. He chooses a new style every time, yet it remains a typical Milan Hulsing comic. He even manages to adapt Harry Mulish’s De Aanslag in such a way that it becomes a comic of his own. That requires guts, risk, and drive.

Atmosphere is another important aspect of Milan Hulsing’s work. He plays with it as if it were of vital importance. As a reader, you can even sense Eastern European influences. Not surprising, given a mother of Czech descent. The ultimate proof of this is, of course, Voetsporen. No other Dutch comic artist could have adapted the stories of the Czech writer Karel Čapek better.

The P. Hans Frankfurtherprijs Award

The P. Hans Frankfurther Award, named after the Dutch comics fan organization Het Stripschap, recognizes an individual(s) or organizations that provide service or contribution award for the comics community. This year’s recipient is DRAWING THE TIMES “a platform where committed graphic journalists and cartoonists worldwide publish work that informs, entertains, engages and challenges readers on global issues and local stories.”

This platform offers an opportunity to bring certain conflicts and situations to light and perhaps even influence the societal debate. Drawing is, after all, a primary language and lends itself perfectly to creating these kinds of stories. The ever-growing group of committed illustrators knows how to make an impact.

In the meantime, more than 130 illustrators/journalists from home and abroad have left one or more graphic reports on Drawing The Times. Anyone who thinks that this is only about unknown and unloved talent is mistaken. Several well-known names have clearly mastered the form of drawn journalism, including: Ulli Lust, Jeroen Janssen, Floor de Goede, Aimée de Jongh, Aloys Oosterwijk, Judith Vanistendael, Trik, and Emma Ringelding.

Storyworld Publieksprijs

The Storyworld Publieksprijs is a category based on children’s books with the widest checked out from public libraries. Below are the books from the five nominees:

The Storyworld Publieksprijs winner will be announced on Saturday, March 21, during the annual Stripschap Awards ceremony at Forum Groningen. The event is free, but requires tickets.
