Tatanja Wood – RIP

Tatanja Wood, award winning artist and colorist for DC Comics, has passed away on February 27 at the age of 99, just 3 days shy of 100 years old.

Born on March 2, 1926 in Darmstadt, Germany. She spent World War II in the Netherlands. After the war she and her brother migrated to the United States in 1947. In 1949, she met Wally Wood and they married in 1950. Wally was a comic book writer and artist. and she was his uncredited assistant.

She started working for DC comics in 1969 and starting in 1973 she was the main colorist for nearly all DC titles until 1983. She retired from the comic book industry in 2003.

Tatanja was inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards Hall of Fame in 2023.

  1. That’s a great write-up in the Times. That was my period of buying and reading comics as a kid. I always noticed the coloring of DC Comics was awesome.

    I used to think I know just about everything about the Golden Age of comics, but then I started learning about the unsung, uncredited women of comics. Huge talents, and it makes me feel having been robbed, not knowing about these artists when I was seeing their work all the time.
