The Return of…or, Now Appearing
Skip to commentsThe return of Ming and Merrill. now (or soon) appearing is Nancy Beiman and Looney Tunes, playing games with Rosebuds and Lum and Abner.
The Return of Ming the Merciless
When last we saw the Master/Monster of Mongo.

After seeing a hologram image of Ming earlier, which may or may not have been manipulated by Ming loyalists, now he appears in the flesh. Ming again threatens the populace of Mongo – and Flash Gordon!

The Return of Merrill the Married

Let’s also note the return of another, his one far less dangerous than Ming.
After taking three weeks off for her honeymoon Rachel Merrill has returned to art duties on Gil Thorp.
Now Appearing on Lambiek’s Comiclopedia

The lead paragraph of the Nancy Beiman entry at Comiclopedia:
Nancy Beiman is an American animator, caricaturist and illustrator. During her career of nearly 40 years in animation, she worked for several of the major studios, most notably on several feature films for the Walt Disney Company. She has also been a teacher in animation and storyboarding at three different institutions, and wrote two academic books on her profession. Beiman’s work as a comic artist included the 1986 comic adaptation of ‘Howard the Duck: The Menace from Outer Space’ (based on Steve Gerber and Val Mayerik’s comic series) and contributions to titles related to Jim Henson’s ‘Muppet Show’. After her retirement, she has released the graphic novel ‘How I Finally Got to Live a Cat’s Life’ (2022) and launched her webcomic ‘FurBabies’ (2023- ) on the GoComics website.
For those of us who weren’t paying attention to Nancy Beiman before her FurBabies appeared on GoComics Bas Schuddeboom supplies a lengthy profile of the cartoonist.

Lum and Abner #750

Donnie Pitchford recently issued the 750th installment of his weekly Lum and Abner comic strip, the second chapter of a new story. But I’m wondering how many note the tribute to a couple of old cartoonists.

“Vince Ogafla” is a mashup of two comic book cartoonists who happened to be brothers. We will again turn to Lambiek for the profiles of Vince (who also did a couple newspaper comic strips) and Ogafla (read that name backwards).
Playing the Color Game

Cartoonist $upr Dee collaborated with colorist Deon Parson on the Sunday Color Supplement Rosebuds.
The Return of Looney Tunes
The Looney Tunes Library is returning to television!

Mike Barnes for The Hollywood Reporter supplies the details:
In late 2022, HBO Max eliminated 256 Looney Tunes shorts from 1950-2004 when its license expired and the streaming arm of Warner Bros. Discovery chose not to renew it, Vulture reported. Last year, another 255 shorts produced from 1930-1949 were excised.
But on Feb. 2 at 8 p.m. PT, the prized animated films — more than 750 in all — will begin running on WBD cable channel TCM as part of a new six-year deal. It all starts with the Oscar-nominated, Tex Avery-directed A Wild Hare (1940), the Merrie Melodies short that’s considered the first “official” Bugs Bunny cartoon.
Cartoons by Tex Avery, Chuck Jones, Bob Clampett, Friz Freleng, and others!
