Skip to commentsA month ago we noted some of the early editorial cartooning awards programs opening the window to submit your work for consideration – National Newspaper Awards, Overseas Press Club, RFK Human Rights, and Sigma Delta Chi. The deadlines for those are still in the future (though National Newspaper Award just barely).
Now we have The National Cartoonists Society, The Herblock Prize, and The Pulitzers calling for entries.
The National Cartoonists Society Divisional Reuben Awards

CALL FOR ENTRIES NOW OPEN NCS Divisional Reuben Awards
The National Cartoonists Society announces its annual Call for Entries for consideration for the NCS Divisional Reuben Awards, recognizing excellence in professional cartooning for work published in 2025. Winners will be announced at the 80th Annual Reuben Awards, held August 7, 2026, in Columbus, Ohio.
Thus call isn’t limited to editorial cartoons, there are a dozen other categories including newspaper comic strips, newspaper comic panels, comic books, digital comic strips and comic books, graphic novels, gag cartoons, various illustration divisions, and more. Including the return of the animation category.

All Entries must be submitted on or by January 23, 2026.
- You do not need to be a member of the National Cartoonists Society to enter.
- There is no submission fee.
The Herblock Prize

The Herb Block Foundation has posted the entry form for their Herblock Prize.
The Herblock Prize contest is open to any newspaper, magazine, wire service or syndicate cartoonist for editorial or political cartoons published in a daily, weekly, or monthly newspaper or magazine published in the U.S. or its territories in 2025 [emphases added]. Cartoons appearing in U.S. editions of foreign publications are also eligible.
The rules and eligibility is unchanged from last year.
Deadline is February 5th, 2026
Note: There is no entry fee for the Herblock Prize contest.
The Pulitzer Prize

From the Pulitzer Prize committee:
The 2026 Pulitzer Prize competition in Journalism (recognizing work published in the 2025 calendar year) has opened. A full list of all 15 Journalism categories is available here.
The deadline for entry is January 26, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. Pacific time [emphasis added]. The 2026 Pulitzer Prize winners and nominated finalists in Journalism and the Books, Drama & Music categories will be announced on Monday, May 4, 2026 at 3:00 p.m. Eastern time.
As a reminder:
- The Editorial Cartooning category is now called Illustrated Reporting and Commentary. Expanded in 2021, it recognizes “a distinguished portfolio of editorial cartoons or other illustrated work (still, animated, or both) characterized by political insight, editorial effectiveness, or public service value.”

The following awards will be made annually as Prizes in Journalism based on material coming from a United States newspaper, magazine or news site that publishes regularly during the calendar year and that adheres to the highest journalistic principles…
