Walt Handelsman’s LAST Cartoon Caption Contest

Walt Handelsman‘s retirement isn’t only the end of his political cartooning, it is also the end of his Caption Contest. NOLA.com announces the last chance to caption a cartoon drawn by Walt.

Emi Brudge’s Last Olive

A while back I wondered what was going to happen with the newspapers that were carrying the Olive part of King Features Weekly Service’s Olive & Popeye with Emi Burdge taking a sabbitical. Now we know.

There are at least a handful of Carpenter Media Group newspapers in Texas that carry a page of KFWS comics that include the Olive & Popeye comic. With the last Emi Burdge Olive strip they switched to Olive & Popeye by Randy Milholland, but they didn’t start in the middle of the current Milholland story the went back two years to August 3, 2023 with the Olive & Popeye story.

Wikipedia Disses the Gil Thorp Team

So I’m used to the snarkers disrespecting the current Gil Thorp creators in the GoComics comments and the same from the guys who comment on the strip at This Week in Milford.

Gil Thorp by Henry Barajas and Rachell Merrill – November 5, 2025

But I was surprised to find peevishness in the Wikipedia entry:

As of 2025 the strip is carried by the lowest number of newspapers in its history. This has been accredited by long time fans as being due to the low-grade quality writing of Henry Barajas and the poor artwork provided by Rachel Merrill.[citation needed]

The author that put that in the entry can’t even quote a source, it is just petulance.

That same “carried by the lowest number of newspapers in its history” could be applied to quite a number of comic strips and panels that aren’t a part of the Gannett 34 and the other newspaper groups who have consolidated their comics pages.

Mike W. Barr Could Use Some Help

Comic book writer Mike W. Barr needs help with medical expenses:

Mike has penned hundreds of memorable stories for us all to enjoy. When Mike was an editor he helped other talent bring their stories to publication. Now, Mike needs our help. Over the past few years, Mike has suffered some catastrophic medical setbacks; starting with multiple knee replacement surgeries. While in the hospital recovering, he was infected with COVID and is still suffering the effects of Long COVID. After he was discharged from the hospital in March of 2024, he returned home. Unfortunately, his condition left Mike unsteady on his feet and caused him to fall, striking his head. Mike lay unconscious on the floor for four days until he was finally found, badly dehydrated and suffering from a serious concussion. Following that, Mike spent several months hospitalized and underwent more surgeries. After being discharged again from the hospital, Mike continues to struggle with his health and needs additional physical therapy. Mike’s medical bills are mounting, far surpassing insurance limits, causing the shut down of further therapy. Without more therapy treatments his overall health is in question.

  1. When a society elects politicians who believe that healthcare should be a capitalist, for profit industry, instead of a beneficial system that helps everyone, sick people are reduced to pleas for crowd funding to finance their treatment, instead of being able to depend on an affordable insurance system, such as is available in many civilized countries.

  2. Somalis aren’t the only “garbage people”. It also refers to the poor and/or minorities. Social Darwinism is alive and well in politics and religion.

  3. As far as the Gil Thorp strip. The current art is the ugliest and most useless for storytelling visual description on the comics page. It is objectively nightmarish.
