The Fearsome Fluffy

From Wikipedia:

Fenrir (Old Norse ‘fen-dweller’) or Fenrisúlfr (Old Norse “Fenrir’s wolf”, often translated “Fenris-wolf”), also referred to as Hróðvitnir (Old Norse “fame-wolf”) and Vánagandr (Old Norse ‘monster of the [River] Ván’), is a monstrous wolf in Norse mythology. In Old Norse texts, Fenrir plays a key role during the events of Ragnarök, where he is foretold to assist in setting the world aflame, resulting in the collapse of humanity and society, and killing the god Odin.

Someone will have to edit the Wikipedia entry to add another alias for the great wolf.

The fearsome Fenrir Fluffy first appeared in The Saga of Brann Bjornson on September 28, 2025.

More Mythology

As Aleta tells a tale of the past with some alterations, Prince Valiant historian Brian Kane reveals that Thomas Yeates has at the same time regaled us with an slight altering of Hal Foster‘s version of events.

Back in July, Thomas Yeates asked Cullen Murphy and myself about the backstory for Justinian and what caused the animosity between him and Val. Cullen had implied a backstory in the strip, but did not elaborate on it. I sent Thomas the image [from 1944] and said, this was Justinian. He was one of Aleta’s suitors when Val kidnapped her. Now this was not something either Foster nor Cullen wrote about. It was a backstory of my own invention and from knowing the Prince Valiant strip so well. It seems my backstory idea is about to be integrated into the Prince Valiant mythos.

Promotion

Stephan Pastis reminds us it is time to get a 2026 calendar and the Pearls Before Swine has just the ticket.

Synchronicity Squared

Alien life forms. Marvin meets a new friend from a distant planet, Danae calls on an old friend this week.

Speaking of A.I. which is the subject of this week’s Non Sequitur…

Non-cartoonist Jon Greenberg had an idea and tried to get Google’s Gemini to create a cartoon. In “I’m no cartoonist. Neither is Google’s Gemini.” he prompts the A.I. to create a cartoon feeding the system a Felipe Galindo sample as a style guide. The results were not without problems.

I’ll be the first to assert that the genuine New Yorker cartoonists have nothing to fear. At least, not yet. Set aside that the joke isn’t good enough for the magazine and the artwork certainly isn’t, but more fundamentally, the image lacks a deft human touch.

Back to sync…

Elementary school Nate and high schooler Pierce get loudspeaker duties this week.

And Pierce bring us to Monday’s Blondie which reminded me of those old cartoonists in the Sixties and Seventies using “hippies” as a source of amusement without a clue as to what the young people were about.

Mostly Gravy new panels every Monday & Saturday

Comics Kingdom introduced a new panel from Ellen Liebenthal this week:

Comics Kingdom is thrilled to welcome Mostly Gravy, a new single-panel comic that proves life’s messiest moments are often the funniest ones.

Created by Ellen Liebenthal, Mostly Gravy is a quirky, observational collection that ladles out laughter one spoonful at a time. Each panel delivers a quick, satisfying hit of humor—capturing the oddities, ironies, and tiny triumphs that make modern life such a deliciously weird stew. Whether it’s navigating social media fatigue, deciphering dating dynamics, or just surviving another Monday, Mostly Gravy serves it all up with dry wit and a wink.

Special Guest Stars

Lola didn’t show up in her strip today, but she did appear on the comics pages.

There was a cameo appearance of an old cartoon character in Hägar the Horrible early this week. While an old comic book character guested for several days in Arctic Circle.

  1. The unintended result of Stephan Pastis’s history of continual self-deprecation was that I was expecting Rat to use the pages as toilet paper.

  2. The three-headed giant dog in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone is also called Fluffy. Homage?
