Syndicated Steve Breen Returns to The San Diego Union-Tribune

After a two year absence from the Southern California newspaper Steve Breen is once more appearing in The San Diego Union-Tribune where he had been the staff cartoonist for 22 years.

In the Summer of 2023 Steve Breen left The Union-Tribune after it was taken over by Alden Capital. Later that same year he signed with inewsource where he stayed for eighteen months. He continued drawing editorial cartoons, distributing his cartoons through Creators Syndicate.

The four cartoons shown in the Saturday reception are not drawn expressly for the newspaper but rather recent syndicated cartoons (here, here, here, and here).

The paper printed a letter welcoming back the cartoonist:

Re “Welcome back, Steve Breen!”: Finally, some good news to read. We have really missed Steve and are looking forward to reading the paper again. Maybe not reading the news so much, but you cannot be too picky.

With the letter the U-T posted a February 2023 by Breen from a past government shutdown, re-relevant.

It remains to be seen if Steve Breen will be contributing new editoons to the U-T for first use.

  1. It’s a refreshing change to see the Union Tribune welcoming a balanced opinion to return to their pages. Back when I lived there, the S.D. Union was a notoriously conservative rag that was simply not worth reading.

  2. Holy cow! That’s great news! Congratulations, Steve!

  3. Great to hear your back, parts of the paper wasn’t the same without you
