Batty Squirrels

The second row of today’s two-tiered Crabgrass introduced new characters who I would like to see return. Matt, the unseen Jeff, Pam, and the unnamed Pam’s husband should make irregular repeat appearances. C’mon Tauhid, make it happen.
Was anyone else reminded of Walt Kelly‘s three bats from Pogo?

Rabbit Season Duck Season Squirrel Season
There was some squirrel synchronicity today as Rhymes with Orange, Slylock Fox, Rose is Rose, The Saga of Brann Bjornson and, naturally, Over the Hedge joined Crabgrass in featuring the scurrying rodents. In “Saga” Webster has the squirrel taking a part in saving Middle Earth!

That Puts to Mind…
There were a few other instances this week, besides Crabgrass, of comics reminding me of other things.

Liniers occasionally pays tribute to the great Winsor McCay as he did in Thursday’s Macanudo.
While today’s Blondie recalls a regular gag of Dagwood hanging out the bathroom window.

The new Blondie logo has me complimenting Broom-Hilda and Garfield on their ever-changing logos. The fonts used in their title panels today made an impression on me.

A few days ago Jules’ Mark Trail had me thinking that it’s been some time since I visited the local Bass Pro.

Miscellany

Loving (and saving) Mike’s Thursday Cornered because I know that illustration will be useful over and over again. And always appreciate the comics observing important events as Andy does with Shrimp & Grits.

Buried at the bottom is the headline of the week:

Ming has returned, or at least a hologram-like image of him has, and his first order of business is taking control of Mongo and seeking retribution against Flash Gordon and his friends and allies..
