Toons Noted This Past Week

Timing

John McPherson, who drew this weeks (months?) ago, gets the Good Timing Award this week.

When I hear Mark Trail canon I think Ed Dodd canon. Turns out to be earlier this year Jules Rivera canon.

There was a time, way before your time Dear Reader, when an insert called Parade was an ever-present part of Sunday newspapers. And during its most pervasive period it contained a cartoon column call Laugh Parade which featured the cartoons of Bill Hoest. A popular character that appeared there every week was Howard Huge.

Howard Huge by Bill Hoest

The stuffed animal Leroy won at the carnival is Howard Huge. A blast from the past.

Huge

Speaking of Huge…

Joey had one heck of a two day growth spurt in Dennis the Menace this past week.

And the occasional huge thick lines in closeups that I like showed up in Blondie this past week.

Tooning In

Quiz time. I got all but four, and half of those I recognize by sight.

Far Out, Man!

Apparently some cartoonists had a 60s party and didn’t invite me.

  1. Ferdinand and Hamilton were originally Ketcham’s assistants for “Dennis”, one would think they could agree on a uniform style sheet. I would also like to know what Joey is doing with his left hand: is that his sister? Or does he suddenly have a girlfriend?

There was once a time when I might have cared about these breaks in continuity, but when the copyright on a legacy strip is owned by the syndicate, it quickly becomes an irrelevant zombie. Dennis should have been laid to rest when Ketcham died.
