CartoonStock’s AI Cartoon Generator

Apparently CartoonStock, “the world’s largest on-line collection of cartoons and comics,” briefly had an Ai cartoon generator on its site. From Michael Maslin:

A follow up to yesterday’s Spill post [link added] about CartoonStock’s use of what it calls  “Ai-generated cartoons and comics.” The Spill has seen an email sent out yesterday late afternoon by CartoonStock to CartoonStock cartoonists with the heading, “Clarification on AI and CartoonStock’s Commitment to Cartoonists”.

The email begins:

“We’ve received some concerned messages regarding the recent addition of an AI cartoon generator on the CartoonStock site. A few cartoonists have expressed strong feelings about this, and we want to take those concerns seriously, as our first priority has always been to support cartoonists and put their interests first.”

According to the email, “The AI Tool has now been removed.”

Joy of Cartooning

Hilary Fitzgerald Campbell is a New Yorker cartoonist, comedian, and author whose first memoir, Murder Book, won the Midwest Publishing Award for Best Graphic Novel in 2022. After working in the film industry, she took up stand-up comedy and became hooked on drawing cartoons for the New Yorker. Below, she talks about growing up with Snoopy on the walls, how nonfiction comics feel both immediate and obsessive, finding her voice, and her book, The Joy of Snacking [link added].

Hilary Fitzgerald Campbell, Joy of Snacking

Amaris Ketcham and Nora Hickey for Autobiographix interview cartoonist Hilary Fitzgerald Campbell.

This is a tricky one to answer. I feel that when you draw every day, you naturally get closer and closer to what your style is. I think my comics are a lot like the way I speak. Erratic, silly, very personal. I personally really enjoy a loose style drawing, like George Booth or Jules Feiffer, so that’s what I gravitated more to in my own work. Also, because I studied film, and make short documentaries on the side, I think that comes out in how I decide to set up a page. Everything is a movie in my head! It’s all a big storyboard!

Hogan’s Alley #24 – the Web Extras

Hogan’s Alley #24

Hogan’s Alley #24 is printed and shipping (though it hasn’t reached my mailbox yet).

Try as we might, even 144 pages can’t contain all the material we had on hand for Hogan’s Alley #24, so we hope you’ll enjoy this material! Some of it also appears in the magazine, and other material appears here exclusively and in color.

Tijuana Bibles, Laurel and Hardy comic strips, cartoon cuisine, the early connection twixt movies and comic strips, and Bob Hope comic books make up Hogan’s Alley issue 24 “Web Extras.”

  1. Unbelievable that CartoonStock has the gall to claim that “our first priority has always been to support cartoonists and put their interests first.”

  2. I got my copy of Hogan’s Alley! Really looking forward to reading it. This is the first time I’ve ordered a copy, and I don’t know why I waited so long.

    1. Ted, get any back issues you can. The articles and features are always timeless and darned well worth reading and having. I don’t get anything for telling you this other than I am willing to bet that you would find any other issues very worth having.

    2. I had every hard-copy issue from number three on. They recently found a stash #1s which I immediately sent for. I can’t over recommend Hogan’s Alley or the forthcoming revival of Nemo, the Classic Comics Library.
Back issues of Hogan’s Alley are available as e-editions for those who read publications in that format.

  3. You guys are right, and I can already tell I’m going to be ordering back issues. This is pure gold.

  4. Thank you for sometimes eliminating pay walls. It’s the only way a (economically) poor old guy like me can stay current. Now, if you could do something about the mobility issues…
