Trojan Comics and Other Tricks

Alley Oop by Joey Allison Sayers and Jonathan Lemon – July 31, 2025

There is no reason for Garg, who had earlier complained that Alley never took him on Oop’s time-traveling escapades, to remember the siege at Troy. But there is good reason for Alley Oop to remember it.

The Name Game

Then Bill Holbrook play’s mind games as On The Fastrack‘s Mars Mission group gets to know each other.

On the Fastrack by Bill Holbrook – July 30, 2025

Then yesterday this Vintage Apartment 3-G came up in the Comics Kingdom feed:

Apartment 3-G by Nick Dallis and Alex Kotzky – November 25, 1971

I’m guessing it’s a tribute to this Harry Harrison who has credits for writing the Flash Gordon comic strip, rather than this then-ten-year-old Harry Harrison.

Red and Rover by Brian Basset – July 29, 2025

More names. That last panel of Tuesday’s Red and Rover has me thinking Red’s new nickname should be Westley.

Macanudo by Liniers – July 31, 2025

Liniers seldom disappoints but he did with this Macanudo. There should have been “The MACANUDO” or something (“The MANDELBAUM”) shaded into that white area as faux-embossment. I even enlarged it hoping to see … something. But nothing there, just negative space.

The Beatles (White Album)

Getting Real

F Minus by Tony Carrillo – August 1, 2025

Sally Forth by Francesco Marciuliano and Jim Keefe – August 1, 2025

F Minus brings a sad truth to the funny pages, while in Sally Forth Hilary and friends’ visit to an iffy amusement park suddenly takes on a new touch of realism with the news from Saudi Arabia.

Guest Starring

I was under the impression that Luann took place in Southern California and The Family Circus resided in Arizona. That’s a long distance car ride to eat at some fast food joint.

Although >spoiler alert< The Family Circus is vacationing at the ocean next week. So I guess it works.

  1. By now Alley Oop is characterized by his author as a complete idiot.

    1. I bet you don’t even follow the Sunday “Little Oop” strips with Alley Oop as a kid.

      1. Little Oop is not exactly a gifted child.

      2. No, I read only the daily strip, and actually I hate the Joey Alison Sayers work on Alley Oop. She completely ruin the character.

    2. Yeah, the artist and writer on Alley Oop have desecrated what used to be a great and humorous adventure strip. I had to give up the self-torture of attempting to read it. Luckily, Chris Aruffo is reprinting all the classic ones.

  2. At the time the “APARTMENT 3G” strip was published, Harry Harrison was a top NY DJ, back when AM radio was a thing (it probably still is). I think that’s what they refer to.

    1. Could be, but…
In 1971 the Ohio born and raised Nick Dallis was living in Arizona, far from NYC. I think the Harry Harrison, who in the Apt 3-G strip is a publisher, would have a closer connection to sci-fi and comics author and illustrator HH than dj HH.
And while Dallis no doubt frequently visited syndicate headquarters in the big city, that big city would be Chicago where the Field family and businesses were located.

  3. Harry Harrison began in the field as an illustrator, often working with Wally Wood, and I have a suspicion he’d already left the USA by 1971, for either Mexico or Ireland. He and his good friend Brian Aldiss were regulars at the annual Novacon, first held in Birmingham UK that November, and they later became honorary presidents of the city’s sf group. Much missed.

  4. So, in conclusion, Harry Harrison is a relatively common name, so there could be lots of people who are possibly being referenced. Or it could be just something generic.
