    “By Windsor M’Cay, famous sports writer”. Wow, King Features sure knows how to show appreciation to their star cartoonists, who were probably made to do the cartoons and write the gags on the gratis.

      I think “sports writer” was an intentional joke, possibly even by McCay himself. A century later, there is no way to know for sure.
