Pia Guerra/WaPo Kate Cartoon Goes Viral

Apparently Pia Guerra‘s cartoon on yesterday’s The Washington Post site (in the hard copy?) referencing the recent Royal photo fail of Kate and kids has taken on a viral virtual life and is being described as “savage” and “brutal”.

At least that’s what news reports are saying.

First the cartoon from the WaPo:

From the U.S. Jack Royston, Chief Royal Correspondent, for Newsweek on the “Brutal Cartoon:”

The Washington Post made light of the mystery with a cartoon depicting William having seemingly made a wooden cut-out puppet of Kate and parading her at the palace window in an apparent attempt to convince the public or media that they had seen the real princess.

The illustration went viral on X where it was viewed 556K times and liked 12K times after it was posted with the message: “Omgg! WaPo.”

From the U.K. John Plunkett at The Poke on the “savage” cartoon:

The American media, as you might know, aren’t holding back in quite the same way as most (all) of the British press. And this cartoon in the Washington Post is absolutely savage.

It’s by Pia Guerra, ‘pencil jockey and co-creator of Y-The Last Man, editorial cartoonist, The New Yorker, MAD Magazine, WaPo, The Nib’ who you can find on Twitter here and on Instagram here.

Plunkett follows a brief explanation with a number of reaction shots from the X/Twitterverse

From Pakistan The New International had a short mention by Wells Oster on the Royals being “mocked:”

Prince William has been dealt a fresh blow as he is mocked by The Washington Post in the wake of Kate Middleton’s photo editing row.

In an editorial cartoon posted on the magazine’s website on Wednesday, the magazine insinuated at the Prince of Wales’ involvement in the princess’ current absence from the public eye as well as latest Mother’s Day photo scandal.

Are reactions to both the scandal and the cartoon much ado about nothing?

  1. BTW, I glanced at it, thought it was slightly clever, but irrelevant to the Post’s readers, and moved on with my life and promptly forgot it until your story.

  2. That cartoon about William and Kate as a wooden puppet was a very insightful and should be a warning to the whole British royalty. I feel sad for them, but they should have known better.
