  1. Back in the early 1990s, I was a l*bby*st for a non-profit organization which should probably remain nameless but whose public-good goals I believed–and still believe–in. (Even so, I still couldn’t bring myself to tell my mother I was a l*bby*st–I told her I was a crack dealer.) One of my jobs was to go to congressional hearings, and I developed great respect for most of the senators and representatives, who knew their stuff, cared about what they were doing, and were trying to do a good job. I saw Paul Wellstone in action, and thought he was a really great guy. OTOH, I also saw Strom Thurmond, and came away thinking that if I were his dog, I’d run away. The point of my rambling, though, is that with notable exceptions, most of the people in congress were actual grownups, which isn’t the case today.
    CONGRESS NEEDS GROWNUPS!!
