CSotD: When you’re in a hole, start digging

I'm not trying to shift into all-politics all-the-time; that's just what seems to be hot the past few days.
And this Jeff Danziger cartoon is irresistable. There was a point in this war where the escape of 500 prisoners would have felt like a disaster, but that point has passed. It seems like just one more case of bailing water with a pitchfork, of trying to assist a government that can't get out of its own way.
Yet it isn't Keystone Kops material either, because, however comically inept the Karzai government appears to be, they are using real bullets over there and we're sending young Americans (and Australians and Canadians etc etc) into a place that has always been, throughout history, a sinkhole for outsiders. The danger is not in the 500 escaped prisoners. The danger is in the fact that they escaped.
Didn't we already learn this lesson?
He that passeth by, and vexeth himself with strife belonging not to him, is like one that taketh a dog by the ears — Proverbs 26:17
