Comic Strip of the Day

CSotD: Tis the season

Retail
When the glurge and dreck of the season become too much, you can always count on Retail to keep it real. Never mind jokes involving elves — these are the people who really have to deal with the demands of the holidays.

The nice thing about Retail is that you don't have to have put in a lot of time in the business to get the jokes. I forget how many weeks I spent selling art supplies, but it wasn't long. It also wasn't long before I became a "manager," though I was still being paid by the hour. If you ever feel you need the word "manager" attached to your name, head on down to the mall and put in a few applications. As soon as they find out you're willing to stay late and close up, you'll be a manager. I was the night manager. I think I was there for two months, but it might not have been that long.

Becoming night manager wasn't the end of the line, though it took nearly a week to ascend to that height. I could have stuck around longer and eventually gotten myself on a level with Marla, where you are salaried and you never, ever get another day off that doesn't involve being called in for one reason or another.

It didn't take me that long to wise up. But I'm glad Norm Feuti went through it all, because this is one of my favorite strips, and this time of year, it just gets better and better.

  1. My very first job was in retail. It lasted long enough for me determine that no matter what else I did in life, I would NEVER work retail again.

  2. Back in the mid-1980s after I got my third hardship deferment for my student loan, I looked for a second job to supplement my $5-per-hour wage at the art supply company. I applied for a sales clerk position at the bookstore across the street, and the manager offered me a job as assistant manager. I took the sales clerk job, but turned down the assistant manager position, since it involved lower pay and more hours than the job I already had.
(These days my second job is selling my photographs at local craft shows. It probably pays less per hour than either of the two jobs above, but it’s infinitely more fun. And I have a better-paying day job now, too.)
