CSotD: Vetoed

Nate

Big Nate offers a reminder of what middle school was really like, for those of us who didn't actually go to middle school but remember junior high. Or, in my case, college, where there was a 7-to-1 ratio of men to women and freshman year was essentially futile. And very much like middle school.

But I digress. The concept of middle school remains a little unclear to me, because it seems to be junior high with sixth graders, and I'm not sure sixth graders are ready for junior high, particularly sixth grade boys. Any system that puts sixth grade boys together with eighth grade girls is inherently defective, and I include the Earth in that rule.

Which is why Big Nate is so funny, and so popular with middle school kids.

  1. Well, I spent sixth grade in a school that had 5th and 6th grade, and seventh grade in a school that had 7th and 8th grade. I didn’t enjoy either. Nor did I enjoy 8th, 9th, 10th, or 11th grade. Twelfth grade was a little better. I did have fun in graduate school, but by that time it was more the subject, and not that I was one of the few men in library school. I was a bit older by then.
