CSotD: Hard times and harder

I don't suppose the freeze on federal wages is more than a token gesture, but token gestures matter in a national emergency. The amount of scrap metal raised during those WWII homefront drives probably didn't make that much of an actual difference to our production of tanks and ships, but getting people to make an effort was important.

Freezing pay isn't one of the options offered in this interactive deficit cutting tool, but cutting the federal workforce by 10 percent is, and that doesn't amount to a hill of beans. Anyway, play with it and see what you come up with.

Meanwhile, a wage freeze is a good gesture, and better than what many in the private sector have experienced, or can expect over the next two years. Including Pulitzer-Prize-winning cartoonist Matt Davies, who has been cut by his paper as a cost-saving measure.

  1. Actually, if you consider how many federal employees there are a wage freeze (including retirement contributions) is probably a heftier sum than you might think.

  2. Not so hefty. Today’s /Times/ editorial says “$5 billion through 2012, and $60 billion over 10 years.” A hillock of beans, at best – but, as Mike wrote, of some symbolic value.
