Comic Strip of the Day

CSotD: Maybe if you add a “T” to the 3rd Symphony …

Frazz

The idea of an intellectual roofer is well within the framework of Frazz, which is, after all, about an intellectual janitor, though I think pounding nails* to Beethoven seems a bit unlikely. Gilbert & Sullivan, more likely, but only complete recordings with all the dialogue, not those cheesy "highlight" recordings.

Given the current weather on the East Coast, I'm glad I only have to deal with the clang and clatter of truck deliveries at the post office through the backyard, and the people who think 8 a.m. is late enough to start up the power mowers, because there's certainly no closing of windows this week. A week of hearing heavy metal blast from a nearby rooftop would about drive me crazy right now.

Though it wouldn't be as bad as spending the week up on that roof myself. It certainly wouldn't matter if your music were cool.

* Usage note: "Pounding nails" is like "dialing the phone." You don't pound nails anymore, you squeeze them. But I don't think anyone is ever going to talk about "squeezing nails" for a living.

Mike Peterson has posted his "Comic Strip of the Day" column every day since 2010. His opinions are his own, but we welcome comments either agreeing or in opposition.

  1. Some people still do “Pound Nails”. They still sell manual hammers and a lot of people still use them.

  2. Yes, but not many people who describe their job as “pounding nails” use them — mostly either home handymen or professionals doing finish work or cabinetry. (And I’ve seen some ghastly finishwork where the quarter round was fastened with nailguns.)
