CSotD: What does it take to arouse the passion?

Crmlu100606

A simple joke, but Mike Luckovich is good at assembling parts to create "simple" jokes.

I was curious to hear how the people blaming Obama would have handled the spill differently, given that the permits for this elaborate project were, no doubt, negotiated well over a year ago and that, no, the Coast Guard doesn't have expertise in capping undersea gushers. After a great deal of sturm und drang, it turned out they were most upset about his lack of, well, sturm und drang. It wasn't enough to call out the oil companies, which he did. They wanted to see some emotion.

God knows what the cartoonists would have done if he'd actually gotten up there and started yelling, though we all know how they capitalized on an imbalanced microphone and Howard Dean.

And then there are the date nights. Reagan and Bush regularly disappeared to their respective ranches for a week or more at a time, but there are critics who had no problem with that, but who now object to POTUS and FLOTUS going off to dinner and a movie. They criticize him for going out of pocket for a couple of hours, but there are also those who compare him to Jimmy Carter and say that he's dithering and trying to micromanage everything.

You can't win. But the final outrage, the thing that would finally get him to make that emotional statement, would, indeed, be sneaking off for a date night and having it turn into a disaster.

And so Luckovich plugs in the final current-events element and gets a laugh from this corner.

Mike Peterson has posted his "Comic Strip of the Day" column every day since 2010. His opinions are his own, but we welcome comments either agreeing or in opposition.

  1. Don’t know about the cartoonists, but some sectors of the blogosphere and the punditocracy are saying he degraded the office of the presidency with his comment about knowing which ass to kick. You can’t win.
Meanwhile, Don Asmussen had a good take today:
