CSotD: A very good place to start …

Rina Piccolo is a particularly good cartoonist who has provided some good laffs in the syndicated world with Tina's Groove — smooth graphics, good gags and a nice newspaper comic. A good strip and on my daily diet. (Tina is a bit like Betty Boop in that I am embarrassed to be turned on by ink lines. This is a talent not to be despised.)

Now Rina is now going another direction with a web strip called "Velia, Dear." The direction she's going is to tell a story she wants to tell, instead of a story she can tell on behalf of newspapers.

Listen: I am not down on comic strips as mass media. As a former newspaper person, I like the people who create the features that can make newspapers viable.

But I also like the people who stretch the limits and who have decided to make comics more than a gentle reader-friendly feature for newspapers or (B) a geeky way to show how hip you are. I think Rina is into a level of cartooning that is honest, mainstream and meaningful.

Rina's intentions are well outlined on Mike Lynch's blog. There's no point in my repeating it; go read.

I've broken with my usual "today" format to post the first comic, and I invite you to hit the "next" button for the few strips that have already run, and then bookmark this strip so you can see what a terrific cartoonist does with a well-rooted subject.
