Comic Strip of the Day

CSotD: I knew he was going to make that joke …

Monty

This blog has been around long enough that Faithful Readers may have picked up a pattern, specifically that I put a premium on timing and silliness. For instance, the (real) Bob Newhart Show often had Bob say, "I just want a quiet evening with no interruptions, Emily," and you knew beyond any possibility of surprise that, a moment later, Howard would burst through the door. It wasn't supposed to be a surprise, any more than having Frank Nelson turn up to ruin Jack Benny's day was a surprise on his show.

Which brings us to Monty, a strip that is often predictable and silly and often tickles my funny bone for just that reason. There are small touches to Jim Meddick's work that add to it, and, in this case, the slightly demented eyes on the researchers in the second panel make the admittedly obvious gag work. To my mind, Meddick's method is much more effective than reaching for a way to make the gag less predictable — when you've come up with a silly idea, why deny it? Embrace it, enhance it and revel in it. Meddick does this on a regular basis, and it keeps me coming back.

  1. I agree – Monty is an almost perfect strip in its timing, characterisation and just plain silliness. I’ve been following it since it was Robotman (and I’m glad the robot is back). This works because the last panel is a comment on the predictability of the second.
    Great stuff.
