Comic Strip of the Day

CSotD: Portrait of the Artist as a Young Crank

Culdesac

It's pretty standard in comedy to have one character make an articulate speech only to have the other character respond with something banal to puncture the whole thing. What cracks me up about this strip is Petey's complete lack of emotional response in return. He was sent to get his little sister for lunch and he got his little sister for lunch. Any dialogue between them is superfluous. And the hands in the pockets make it even funnier.

COMING ATTRACTIONS: I've been running "Sunday Classics" mostly because the format of this page doesn't make posting Sunday strips terribly practical. However, starting tomorrow, Sundays will feature a series of interviews I did in 2003 with the cartoonists whose strips were in the Post-Star, where I then worked. There are 20 in the series, the first being with the late Jerry Bittle, best known as the creator of "Geech" but in this case discussing his other strip, "Shirley and Son."
