CSotD: Train wreck a’comin’

Sally_Forth

One of the things I used to rail about in TV shows decades ago was the random introduction of new characters as someone's best friend or cousin or college roommate in order to create a crisis that would be solved by the end of the episode with that supposedly important character never to be seen again. With the introduction of semi-serials like "Dallas" and, now, "Desperate Housewives" and their ilk, TV writers do at least ease these characters into the cast for a few episodes before setting off the explosions.

Still, it's much better when a writer is able to create chaos with well-established characters, and readers of Sally Forth probably didn't see this one coming — Sally's co-worker, Ralph, has been the center of enough workplace annoyances that his going on at the office about his divorce didn't seem that out of the ordinary, while her sister Jackie is also often at loose ends, so, when Jackie called because her life was unraveling, it didn't necessarily seem part of the "Ralph's divorce" storyline.

And yet here we are. And we cannot look away.
