Comic Strip of the Day

CSotD: You’ve gotta have Heart

Heart
Mark Tatulli is getting a lot of attention for Lio these days, but eight years before he developed that strip in 2006, he put himself on the map with Heart of the City, a charming strip about an overly dramatic, ambitious little girl who I think is going to grow up to be Lucy Ricardo. The relationship between Heart and Dean is a major element in the strip — he's fiercely loyal to her, but utterly immune to any thoughts of romance — but there are also the impossible demands for exotic costumes and projects she puts on her long-suffering mother and the down-to-earth wisdom of her affectionate but no-nonsense nanny, Mrs. Angelini. It adds up to a strip that goes beyond the obvious with some regularity. See sidebar for a collection.

  1. This strip encapsulates most 6th-grade romances that I’ve seen as a teacher.
