Four percent of teens read comics in newspaper

From a story out of Editor and Publisher comes a study that teens who read the paper continue the habit as they get older – upwards of 75%. That is certainly good for an industry that lost 2.5% of its paid circulation in the last quarter of last year and the first quarter of this year.Β  One other statist that is contrary to what many surveys report is that only four percent of teens read the comics.

  1. It’s probably because none of the cartoons are written in texting. The “LOL” “O I kn txt” crap.

  3. But then, how many comic strips these days are AIMED at kids and teens? There are a lot of strips about office politics, real politics, and parenting. Most of the strips that have teens in them (Zits, Stone Soup) are laughing AT teens, not WITH them.

(Not that this is necessarily bad. I think they’re funny… but I haven’t been a teen in a loooong time.)

Maybe the syndicates should start offering a few strips BY teens. Scout the university newspapers; there may be some hidden treasures out there.

  5. I disagree with the comment on laughing at teens….

Stone Soup does not laugh at anybody and ZITS is about a teen and friends…

don’t see laughing at at all.
