I live in St. Louis and read the P-D. Dog Eat Doug seems sweet enough, but it was a disappointing replacement for Lucky Cow, which was dropped by stealth — pulled to make room for the Calvin & Hobbes promo run, and then replaced without explanation by Dog Eat Doug. Given that trade-off, I’m not inclined to welcome yet another cute-kid-and-animal strip in this slot. Apparently I’m not the only one to say that to the P-D.

I second Robin’s thoughts. Doug is pleasant enough, but there are so many superior strips that are fighting for space. Newspapers need professional buyers for their comics sections, not editors. Editors don’t know what’s funny, they know what’s newsworthy and even that’s debatable — they usually let AP tell them.
