National Comic Book Day honors the art, artists, and stories of comic books.
The South Florida Reporter provides a timeline of American comic books (some of the “facts” are a bit iffy) in an article titled “People Who Collect Comic Books Are Known As A Pannapictagraphist.”
“One of the earliest known comics printed was The Adventures of Obadiah Oldbuck.”
The 1841 British bootleg (copyright laws were non-existant then) version recently sold for $18,300 at Heritage.
I have no idea if Obadiah Oldbuck is included in Tony (aka Jenny Blake) Isabella’s 1000 Comic Books You Must Read. To be honest other than the comics shown on the cover of the book I don’t know what is included and what is excluded, but it is probably a starting point.
There is a nice variety of genres on the cover though I don’t see any of a certain type:
As much as I love Ron Goulart’s histories of comic books the recommended history of comic books is the set from TwoMorrows: American Comic Book Chronicles. But when is the pre-1940s history coming?
Not all comic books are 36-64 page stapled floppies.
