Peter M. Wallace is an Episcopal priest in Hawai’i, an author, and a fan of comic strips. He used his most recent weekly Substack essay “In Praise of the Comic Strip” to proclaim the virtues of the small reading material to society and to newspapers.
First of all, I confess, I have loved comic strips for as long as I can remember.
I still read comic strips every morning. I do get my local newspaper, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, delivered, but I will admit I don’t read them there, though I scan them. Instead I get daily emails with all my favorite strips from the syndicates, GoComics and ComicsKingdom.
In a wonderful essay about the comic strip Wallace bemoans the current trend in newspapers treating the daily attraction and ritual as expendable.
