Comic Strips

Dateline: The Funny Pages (News)

With FurBabies, Talk Talk Talk, Barney Google and Snuffy Smith, Cathy, Pearls Before Swine, FoxTrot, and a detour to the sports page.

FurBabies Returning

Nancy Beiman last month decided to take a sabbatical from her daily FurBabies comic strip. The pause is lasting less than expected. From Nancy’s Substack:

I’m bringing the strip back on July 26. A story appeared inspired by two actual events, the characters returned, and away we go.

It’s All About You Returns (Sorta)

It’s All About You by Tony Murphy was a local strip in 2004 that went national from 2007 to 2010 when Tony signed with the Washington Post Writers Group. Now tony brings word that he is back in the comics game.

From Tony:

Cartoonist Tony Murphy, who years ago drew the syndicated comic strip “It’s All About You” for the Washington Post Writers Group, has “rebooted” the strip on instagram.

It now has new characters — as well as some of the old ones — and goes under the new title “Talk Talk Talk.”

“Actually, it’s more of a reincarnation than a reboot,” said Murphy.

Barney Google and Snuffy Smith with family and friends by John Rose

John Rose tells us that he created a poster for attendees of last weekend’s Fredericksburg Comic Con.

Bodacious thanks to Mike Federali of Incredible Conventions for asking, and Amy Anderson and King Features

for giving me the go-ahead, to create this giveaway poster for attendees at Fredericksburg Comic Con!

It was such a fun project to work on!

AACK!

Cathy Guisewite and Cathy

Here’s is an appearance that is forthcoming: cartoonist Cathy Guisewite at The Billy Ireland.

Join us for a FREE program celebrating the 50th anniversary of Cathy Guisewite’s beloved comic strip, Cathy, as part of the National Cartoonists Society Showcase day of events!

In celebration of the 50 year anniversary of the Cathy comic strip, Cathy Guisewite will talk about the joys and blunders of creating and maintaining a daily comic strip for 34 years and what happens when it ends. Cathy will shamelessly discuss her deranged work habits, her bribery protocols and her needy relationship with her personal assistant — currently a dog named Linus.

Order your copy of the Cathy 50th Anniversary Edition now through Andrews McMeel.

Not a Comic Strip, But 30 Panels

Okay it’s from last month but it is still baseball season.

Even with computer assistance Kirk Walters had to have put in some time to get those 30 team and 30 business logos on all the Major League Baseball jerseys. I do note he used the same drawing but he had to do it 30 times! Kirk did draw each of the pinstripes individually.

I tip my hat to Kirk for the effort and the commentary.

Speaking of Panels and Anniversaries

Stephan Pastis notifies us of an upcoming appearance.

Come see me interviewed by FoxTrot creator Bill Amend at San Diego Comic Con [link added] on Friday, July 24, at 1:30 pm. I’m a true joy to meet.

  1. Jersey sponsorship is the norm is European football (aka “soccer”), and nobody seems to worry about it. It seems strange that the American leagues (MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL) are so concerned about the “commercialization” of their team uniforms, when the teams themselves are being hawked off for absurd amounts of money (the Seahawks just went for 9 billion).
