Patrick M. Reynolds built his cartooning career on illustrating history with such comic strips and features as Flashbacks, Texas Lore, and Big Apple Almanac. But…
It was with Pennsylvania Profiles that he began the history lessons, it was his own backyard.
Reynolds retired a few years ago but as Ron Devlin at the Republican Herald tells us in a profile of the cartoonist this week Patrick at 85 is still a history buff and still on the lecture circuit:
Reynolds, 85, a Lancaster County resident, is the featured speaker in the Minersville Historical Society’s America250 Speaker Series at 7 p.m. July 23 at Valley Road Venue, formerly the Duncott Fire Company.
“Patrick Reynolds will bring his penchant for uncovering obscure tidbits about famous historical events to this program on the Declaration of Independence,” said Ellen Murphy Gelches, Minersville Historical Society president. “This is truly the highlight of the society’s America250 Speaker Series.”
Reynolds produced the “Big Apple Almanac” for Newsday in Long Island and “Flashbacks” for the Washington Post.
It was the “Yankee Almanac” in the Boston Globe, Reynolds says, that inspired the idea for “Pennsylvania Profiles.”
In 1977, its first year, “Pennsylvania Profiles” ran in about 20 newspapers across the state.
Pennsylvania Profiles actually began in the bicentennial year of 1976.
The final Pennsylvania Profiles I find is from 1995 by which time Flashbacks, Big Apple Almanac, and Texas Lore were ongoing comics.
