The New Improved Billy Ireland

After six months of renovations and upgrades the Museum part of The Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum will reopen Saturday May 23. Madeline Bradshaw for Ohio State University’s The Lantern reports:

Ohio State’s Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum, home to the world’s largest cartoon and comic collection, will turn a new page and reopen Saturday with renovated galleries and brand new exhibits.

“The Story of Comics” at The Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum

As the Chelsea Wiley at the Columbus Navigator informs us the “The Story of Comics” will dominate:

A central addition to the museum is “Story of Comics,” a permanent exhibition that examines the history of comics and cartoon art across more than 400 years.

The exhibit includes original artwork, interactive elements and themed gallery spaces focused on how comics are created and how the medium has developed. One gallery features original work from Calvin & Hobbes by Bill Watterson, one of the museum’s most well-known collections.

Chris Ware’s “Life Is Complicated” exhibit at The Billy Ireland

The big re-opening exhibit features celebrated cartoonist Chris Ware’s “Life Is Complicated” exhibit.

After three years of touring European museums (including the Pompidou Center in Paris and the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona) Ware’s work makes its final and only American appearance at the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum on the campus of Ohio State. Designed and lightly annotated by the artist, the exhibit includes original drawings, notes and sketches as well as sculptures, paintings and auxiliary objects too fragile to ship internationally – some which will be exhibited for the first time. Life is Complicated will be on display from May 23 through January 3, 2027.

Chris Ware personally took a hand in directing the installation of his exhibit at The Billy Ireland.

The National Cartoonists Society’s 80th annual Reuben Conference and Awards will be held in Columbus Ohio this August and the organization will partner with The Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum for some events.

  1. Is there an admission fee for this museum?

    1. “Admission to the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum galleries and reading room is free for all. Our events and programs are free as well, and any exceptions are noted in event listings. Please consider making a donation online or in-person to support our mission and help keep our resources free.” https://cartoons.osu.edu/visit

  2. I donated all the materials I collected for How Comics Are Made to the Billy, and I understand some are in the new permanent exhibition. My video made for the Bill Blackbeard on comics production in newspaper will also be running continuously. I gotta get to Columbus to see it!
