British Cartooning Orgs Take Positions on AI for Members, Awards
Skip to commentsOver the weekend the Cartoonists’ Club of Great Britain posted their position on their member’s use of generative AI. The policy was originally printed in their July 2025 edition of The Jester. Earlier this spring the Professional Cartoonists’ Organisation updated their FAQ page to include their policy.

Both organizations take similar positions on the following:
- Cartoons should be a human creative art form
- They will reject any submissions for awards that were created with generative AI
- They won’t post or use AI created work on their website or socials
- New or current membership will be rejected or reviewed if the artists persists in using AI.
The Professional Cartoonists Organisation takes the last point further by saying any cartoonists that engages in “widespread use of generative AI, sell Generative AI artwork, or who submit AI generated artwork for paid publication that displaces human created artwork.”
The Cartoonists’ Club holds an annual “Jester cover cartoon contest”, and the PCO bestows annual SPLAT awards given in 10 categories including Cartoonist of the Year. You can read the Cartoonists’ Club of Great Britain policy on their website and the Professional Cartoonists’ Organisation FAQ on Generative AI on theirs.

Here in the U.S., the Society of Illustrators, National Cartoonists Society, and Association of American Editorial Cartoonists released statements in 2022 rejecting the use of AI art in their award submissions. Only the AAEC state membership might be denied or revoked for cartoonists who use AI-generated art in their work.
