Comic Strips Gatherings GoComics Interviews

Cartoonists Talking Shop

When cartoonists get together they talk about any number of things: non-Euclidean geometry, post-Rawlsian public reason, the price of tea in China, etc. GoComics has taken that idea and narrowed it down to comics.

Kathy Hilliard tells us:

GoComics is rolling out a new feature that might be of interest: “Cartoonist to Cartoonist” – in which two creators interview each other, with fascinating, informative (and entertaining) results.

Kicking off the new Cartoonist to Cartoonist feature GoComics has Luann creators Greg & Karen Evans interviewing Paul Gilligan of Pooch Café fame, and vice versa.

What happens when two generations of one comic strip sit down with the creator of another? You get a conversation about toxic sharks, accidentally launching a book you haven’t finished writing yet, and why lying in bed convinced you’re the worst cartoonist who ever lived is part of the job description.

Greg Evans has been drawing “Luann” since 1985. His daughter Karen joined him as a co-writer and is now president of the National Cartoonists Society. Paul Gilligan has been writing and drawing “Pooch Café” for 26 years. We got them together to talk about the cartooning craft, creative survival, and anything they’d do differently.
