Chris Ware to Headline Reopening Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum

The Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum will reopen on May 23 after building and HVAC improvements and a redesign of the layout of the exhibition areas. Chris Ware’s international exhibition Life is Complicated, will headline the reopening.

From the Billy Ireland website regarding the changes to the exhibit areas:

At the heart of the enhanced museum experience is Story of Comics, a new permanent exhibition exploring the evolution of comics and cartoon art over more than 400 years. Through original artwork, interactive elements and themed gallery spaces, visitors can discover how comics communicate, how they are created and how the medium has developed over time. This includes a dedicated gallery that highlights original Calvin & Hobbes artwork by Bill Watterson, one of the museum’s most recognized and beloved collections, offering a nostalgic and engaging experience for visitors. The Story of Comics exhibition was made possible through a generous grant from the Terra Foundation for American Art.

The Life is Complicated has been traveling through Europe for the last three years appearing in museums in Paris and Barcelona. The Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum will be the only U.S. venue for the exhibit which will include “original drawings, notes and sketches as well as sculptures, paintings and auxiliary objects too fragile to ship internationally.

Chris Ware will attend a public event at the museum on October 17. The exhibit runs through January 3, 2027.
