The Sunday Comic Strip Report

Rex Morgan, M.D. writer/artist Terry Beatty reports that he is home from the surgeions cracking his chest open:

Anyhow, I am pleased to report I am out of the hospital, back home, and settling in to a post surgery recovery situation. I hit the markers for hospital discharge sooner than expected, and while not everything was a cakewalk, my hospital stay was less challenging than I thought it would be.

Terry, who will continue writing the comic strip, also informs us who will be the temporary artist during Terry’s recuperation beginning in April or maybe very late March:

King Features is making it easy to have my comic strip “ghosted” for a period, so that everything moves forward as it should. In about two months, you might notice a slight shift in drawing style, as Mimi Simon, Mike Manley’s assistant on Judge Parker and The Phantom, steps up to fill in for recovering me on Rex Morgan. I’ve seen the first week, and I think it’s tops. I’ll be back on board as soon as possible, but we’re not sure exactly when that will be just yet.

Mimi Simon has been Mike Manley‘s art assistant since the Summer of 2017. In a 2018 interview with Jermayn Parker at Chronicle Chamber:

I started working in the beginning of June … I think the first day I worked on was June 28th 2017, since Mike is a few weeks ahead. It was where Mozz tells the Phantom of his vision that he’s going to get killed.

Whoa! Look at all those panels!

Prickly City by Scott Stantis – February 8, 2026
Shoe by Ben Lansing and Susie MacNelly – February 8, 2026

Came across Prickly City and stopped short. That’s a rarity – a multipanel Prickly City Sunday. Checking some recent past Sunday Prickly Citys it’s not so rare – but it is the regular comic strip format that struck me as unusual for PC. It is usually more “artsy-fartsy.”

Then continuing my scroll down the GoComics feed I again am surprised by the multipanel Shoe. Shoe regularly has two or three panels on Sunday but again it is the “regular order” of the strip that I am unaccustomed to.

I’ll once again plead the case to GoComics that, after this many years, Ben Lansing should be credited.

More Weirdness

Insanity Streak by Tony Lopes – February 7, 2026

Insanity Streak was also surprisingly different on Saturday. But just who does that blue arm belong to?

More Caring for The People of His City

Sally Forth by Francesco Marciuliano and Jim Keefe original art

Jim Keefe is offering the original art for the October 15, 2017 Sally Forth Sunday page to the highest bidder on eBay with proceeds going to a local Minneapolis school:

Just a quick heads up that I have original art for a Sally Forth Sunday page up for sale on eBay. My wife Deb works for the local Minneapolis school district, so net proceeds of the sale will go to a local Minneapolis school which is being overwhelmed as they help families affected by ICE agents.

Here’s the link.

The original art for sale includes the drop panel, color guide, and the Sunday page clipped from the local paper, the StarTibune.

Shrimp & Grits Off the Menu?

For the past two weeks the Sunday Shrimp & Grits has been in rerun status. I noticed it last week (originally appeared January 30, 2022) but thought it was maybe a second time thing (it had happened once before), but with this Sunday again being a rerun (originally appeared February 6, 2022) it seems that the strip is now completely rerun (the dailies have been rerun since November 27, 2023).

Shrimp & Grits by Andy Marlette – January 25, 2026 (the last new Shrimp & Grits?)

We have reached out to creator Andy Marlette for comment.
