Comic Strip of the Day

CSotD: Three colleges I always confuse: Depaul, Depauw, Default

Among the things we might consider to save tax money, how about cutting off these bloodsuckers? Tom the Dancing Bug on the scam artists and thieves who recruit the underemployed to apply for Pell Grants and student loans, and to use up their GI Bill funding on their behalf, pressuring people to sign up who won't complete their first year, much less be able to pay back their loans.

One aspect of working at home is the occasional (!) daytime TV that sneaks into the workday. Daytime TV ads were once pitched at stay-at-home moms and featured disposable diapers, over-the-counter medications and convenience foods. Now, there is a significant shift to scams intended to fleece people who have no place else to be in the middle of a weekday, including worthless coin collections, ads for free medical supplies and opportunities to educate yourself for a better life. Best of all, they can get you the scholarships you need and a free scooter!

Before there are any cuts in education, maybe the "waste fraud and abuse" folks ought to check this out. (Senator Tom Harkin has led inquiries, but where's the corrective legislation?)

Petey Meanwhile, Team Cul de Sac has been recruiting cartoonists to create their own takes on Richard Thompson's characters, with the resulting art to be published in a book and then the originals auctioned off, and proceeds going to fund Parkinson's research. Thompson (a friend of this blog) has been diagnosed with the disease.

I like the fact that, rather than attempt to reinvent the wheel, Thompson's friend Chris Sparks teamed up with the Michael J. Fox people, channeling this effort into a productive, up-and-running foundation. And there has been a good response, but the big news yesterday was that reclusive Calvin and Hobbes creator Bill Watterson has donated a piece to the effort.

It's a major surprise, but not quite a shock, as Watterson also emerged to write the intro to Richard's first collection of strips, which was indeed a shock at the time. And, as Universal Press Syndicate's John Glynn wondered aloud at Facebook: "Wonder what this will fetch at auction?"

Michael Cavna has the best write-up on the surprise donation and the overall effort.

  1. This was certainly the most exciting news of the week!(despite our plethora of election news) I’ve just moved and have been occupied with bringing back order to the books. This morning I was working with the comics collection, lovingly remembering Watterson and putting his books beside Thompson’s–almost in the correct alphabetical order, but even more in spirit order.
