CSotD: Can’t or won’t? Cantor won’t.

Clayjones
When the East Coast earthquake struck, it gave Fredericksburg, Virginia, home of the Free Lance Star, a pretty good jolt. Cartoonist Clay Jones reported dust coming out of the ceiling tiles, an evacuation of the building and a general sense of impending doom.

Now, less than a week later, Virginia is in an official state of emergency in anticipation of Hurricane Irene, while, as if to hold a dress rehearsal, yesterday's storm did a pretty fair job of knocking things over.

All of which makes it doubly annoying to be just outside Virginia's Seventh Congressional District, and to have that district within your paper's distribution area, given that the pubic servant who represents the epicenter of the quake is House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (emphasis on "can't" as in "can't be bothered" as well as "cant" as in "repeating catchy words without pondering their meaning.")

To be fair, Cantor said yesterday that the government would find funds to help with the earthquake damage. They would simply have to remove a few babies from life support and put some old people out on the streets in order to do it.

And he was able to get to the heart of the issue: “Obviously, the problem is that people in Virginia don’t have earthquake insurance.”

Dammit, people, the private sector is doing its best to sell you solutions and you're just not cooperating!

Clay's rant on the topic is more local and more interesting than anything I might say, except to add that, for those who thought the federal government's response to Katrina was inadequate, folks, you ain't heard nothin' yet.

Which, come to think of it, is a quote from a movie about a cantor.

The good kind of cantor, that is.

Speaking of funding

Contrary to reports, I do have two nickels to rub together. Or at least I did. Now I'm sending one of them here, and, if you like cartoons and wouldn't mind spending upfront basically about what you'd spend later for a DVD of this film, you should do the same. You'll even get that DVD, once the project is funded and finished.

And if you've got three nickels, well, come on, you can't rub them all together at the same time anyway:

  1. I wonder if Cantor has ever bought earthquake insurance. Out here in California, where earthquakes happen occasionally, too, there are a whole lot of folks who go without it because of the extremely high deductible that always is part of the policy.
I have a friend who says he has very cheap earthquake insurance, though: a pack of matches. He says that when his house is reduced to rubble, he’ll strike the matches and toss them on the pile so that maybe the ruin will be covered under his fire protection.
It won’t work, of course, but neither does earthquake insurance for most of us.

  2. For several years near the turn of the century, Ohio had many flood events. I don’t live near a river. I never filed any kind of a claim on my homeowners policy. Yet every year, the premiums went up until they had nearly doubled. Then we had some dry years and the premiums gradually went down. This year, more floods, though not as bad as the 90’s No claims by me. Premium went up about $75 for the year. Ah-yep.
