Comic Strip of the Day

CSotD: Some of my favorite strips are …

"The Knight Life" is as much a journal as it is a comic strip, and this Sunday's entry provides yet another insight into the frustration of, not just Keith Knight, but a number of African-American cartoonists.

Some time ago, there was a quiet protest in which several black artists used the same gag on the same day, modified to each strip's setting, pace and mood, to show the mindset which suggests that having a "black" cartoon is purely a demographic decision and that, if you have one, you don't need another.

It might have had more impact if it were not the truth — I'm not sure there were very many newspapers where more than one variation of the joke appeared.

After all, a newspaper that already has a cartoon strip about a little boy doesn't need a strip about a hip young single artist or about a couple of guys who run a diner or about a cop and his family or about college students, right? Right. That would be redundant.

And you certainly don't need any of those strips if you serve an area that doesn't have any little boys, hip singles, restaurants, families or colleges. Who would read them?

Mike Peterson has posted his "Comic Strip of the Day" column every day since 2010. His opinions are his own, but we welcome comments either agreeing or in opposition.
