CSotD: Thoughts from Christchurch

26february001
Comics Reporter spotlighted this timely blog entry on the recent earthquake in New Zealand. This is only the first of several multi-panel pieces that comprise the blog entry, so go have a look at the rest.

The blogger/cartoonist/writer/graphic designer, Sarah E. Laing, lives in Auckland and her blog is a reflection on whatever crosses her path, described as "reading, writing, parenting, angsting."

Fans of "Between Friends," "Pajama Diaries," "On a Claire Day," and Stephanie Piro's contributions to "Six Chix" should bookmark it for regular visits. She's a good artist with a nice ear and, however big her audience is, it deserves to be bigger.

As for this particular blog entry, I haven't figured out how I should feel about the earthquake. I mean, of course, I'm saddened for the people it happened to, but our response is certainly different when something like that happens in a First World country than when it happens to someone in the Third World, isn't it?

We do assume that people in places like Chile and Japan and New Zealand can sort themselves out and will let us know if they need anything out of the routine. We also assume that people in places like Haiti will need massive and immediate assistance. And we're probably right, but, still, it's funny how quickly we come to those conclusions.

It's a bit like driving by someone broken down on the side of the highway. You take a look and, in those few seconds, you make a quick judgment. If they look completely helpless, you stop. If they look like they've got things in hand, you don't. And the ones in the middle trouble you as you go on down the road. Should I have stopped? Are they going to be alright? Will someone else pull over?

There's nothing condescending or patronizing, of course, in slowing down, rolling down a window and shouting, "Are you all right?" It's simply good manners.

Or, at least, it was until we built superhighways and all started traveling at 80 mph.

  1. Excellent post, and a good explanation which I hadn’t figured out myself of why I feel so conflicted about my response to the NZ earthquake.
