Ashraf Omar Referred to Criminal Court

Egyptian cartoonist Ashraf Omar has been referred to criminal court. Ashraf has been detained since July of 2024 on charges of joining a terrorist group, publishing false news, and misusing social media. The latest move advances Egypt’s effort to sentence Ashraf. Since his arrest Egypt’s State Security Prosecution has not provided evidence of his alleged crimes.

From The New Arab:

Ali said Omar’s wife, Nada Maghith, learned of the referral by chance during a visit to him at the 10th of Ramadan Prison on Saturday morning.

She said Omar had been taken from his cell on Tuesday to the prosecution headquarters in New Cairo without prior notice to him or his legal team.

He was informed of the referral decision alongside other defendants but was not allowed to review it or learn the full charges against him.

Ashraf, whose work appeared in Al-Manassa, has been a vocal critic of the Egyptian government.
