Comic Strips

Of Caricatures and Crossovers and Chronologies

It’s All in the Timing

That was some timing for Zippy to mention Superman #1 at the same time as a near mint issue sells for $12,200,000. What are the chances that Griffy was aware of the auction deadline a month earlier when he created the strip?

Much less likely is that Dave Whamond would know that days before his Reality Check vaccine panel is published, a Sunday done six or more weeks ago, RFK, Jr. would instruct the Centers for Disease Control to change its language regarding vaccines and autism.

Caricatures

So I knew those space cowboy characters crashing into Sally Forth were supposed to someones though I didn’t know who, except for the blond guy being Flash Gordon naturally. Artist Jim Keefe identified the actors for us.

There was a time when I could identify the then current crop of actors and players, but that time is long gone. For example when Tom Armstrong was drawing Tom Batiuk’s John Darling I knew who was who.

John Darling by Tom Batiuk and Tom Armstrong – March 25, 1979

Back then I could, and still can, name every celebrity in the second and third rows of the above panel.

Now the most I can say is the guy looks familiar but without Armstrong naming him I couldn’t ID him. Elsewhere: I think I know who that guy on Toby’s TV is supposed to be.

Oh, about those Sally Forth portraits — for those of you who don’t get Jim Keefe Patreon (you’re missing out):

1st Panel Bkgd – Keir Dullea from 2001 A Space Odyssey; 1st Panel Captain – Random TikTok woman; 1st Panel Helsman – John Cho from Star Trek

2nd panel left to right. Buster Crabbe from Flash Gordon; My wife Deb in her 20s; John Cho from Star Trek

Isn’t that turkey from WKRP.

A Turn of Phrase

Oh, you thought we were done with Sally Forth.

The Bottom of the deck. It’s “the bottom of the deck” Ces. Was it space restrictions that forced “under”?

And I will go to my grave insisting it is “word balloons” not “speech bubbles.”

For BC it was a double Sundae scoop today:

Three if you count Back to B.C. though the BC character didn’t appear in the oldie.

But Adam @ Home took me back to an even older golden oldie.

Adam’s attempt at cheerleading brings to mind an occasional attempt at same in the old Pogo:

Of Future Funnies and Golden Oldies

This Andy Capp comic strip will show up in America in about two weeks. Until then put on some Kinks!

    1. No I meant the Classic B.C. I thought the character paging throught the dictionary in Back to B.C. was Thor but I guess it is BC. I am so used to the current look I am having trouble differentiating the original characters.

      1. I find it curious that the rendition of Hart’s “B.C.” characters in the current “Wizard of Id” strip is (much) closer to the originals than the versions shown in current “B.C.” strips, despite the fact that it is the same artist doing both strips.

  1. Marie Severin was the greatest comic book caricature artist.

  2. I still have a “Pogo for President” campaign button, with Pogo asking “Are we downhearted?“, to which Porky replies “Lemme think…“.

  3. You are 100% correct. It’s “word balloon” not “speech bubble.” 😉

  4. D. D. Degg – And don’t think I’m not going to quote you on the “for those of you who don’t get Jim Keefe Patreon, you’re missing out.” statement. 🙂
