Tiptoe Thru the Comics

The other day we took Lennie Peterson to the woodshed for claiming all cartoonists work like he does. A couple days later Lennie responded to our objection thru his comic strip The Big Picture.

Well, this time we agree with him completely, especially with that panel where he mentions us by name.

Also yesterday the WaynoBlog linked to a Daily Cartoonist post from 15 years ago.

In discussing the amazing cartoonist Bill Griffith the amazing cartoonist Wayno noted:

Bill’s fantastic art and writing, impeccable primary research for his books, and exemplary work ethic are deeply inspiring.

The quote opening this post is a guiding principle here at Bizarro Studios. It’s from “Griffy’s Top 40 List on Comics and Their Creation,” which should be required reading for cartoonists. We’re fortunate to have a community of readers who are willing to do a little work to meet us halfway.

The link embedded in Wayno’s quote goes to a 2011 Daily Cartoonist post about “Griffy’s Top 40.”

It is nice to be mentioned by famous cartoonists like Lennie and Wayno, whether it is regarding recent posts or posts from our 20 year history. Thanks guys!

Wayno’s “Weirdos of a Feather” Saturday entry also included what he calls “an abbreviated Griffy’s top forty” from the Zippy the Pinhead’s comic strip past.

In other cartoonists on cartooning we have a two day series from Over the Hedge here and here.

While Wiley shows us the thrilling, intoxicating daily life of the cartoonist. Maybe just intoxicating.

But going back to where we started — sometimes I have to question the cartoonist.

When someone explains it I may appreciate Friday’s Strange Brew, until then it is a CIDU.

Jimmy Delach, who has access to next week’s Jumble puzzles thru one of his local newspaper’s weekend edition, informs us of the upcoming Guest Jumbler sequence:

Monday 11/17: Jonathan Lemon (Alley Oop)

Tuesday 11/18: Jenny Campbell (Flo & Friends)

Wednesday 11/19: George Gant (Beware Of Toddler)

Thursday 11/20: John Kovaleski (Daddy Daze)

Friday 11/21: Rina Piccolo (Rhymes With Orange)

Saturday 11/22: Gary Hallgren (Hagar The Horrible)

Thanks James.

Update:

Jonathan Lemon, he’s on the above list, shows off a bonus of being a Guest Jumbler.

Believe It or Not sometimes there are other places to get the whole enchilada when GoComics doesn’ t come thru. Though I have no problem with the daily, as opposed to the Sunday, being in black and white.

Dana Simpson has evidently read some of the complaints about GoComics since they switched their archives from an all-free-for-all system to offering very limited freebies.

And…

I’m a lot closer to the Equator than Sophie in Norway but I agree with her.

Since the time change the dark comes too damn early!

  1. Lennie absolutely right about TDC. That last panel of his strip got a smile out of me.

Griffy’s list that says it can take years to find the right tools embarrassingly reminds me that I drew the first several weeks (my syndicate submissions) of Spooner with a roller ball pen before I switched to a Hunt 512 and Speedball FB 6 for Lettering. Until then, I’d never penciled before inking because it just created more work. But then I became a “professional.” Now, I guess these are considered archaic.

Wiley’s comic reminds me of why I never set up a live cam so people could watch me work lol.

Strange Brew… maybe that’s kind of a reverse dilettante?

    1. It took me a long time to find the right pens for me as well. And even then I like to try new things out on a whim.

  2. Yes, I agree with that. I later also a Zebra G and it was great, very like the 512. It’s great when you find the thing that clicks. I also used some brush pens for illustration work… The ones made with India ink. Pitt, I think, and the Pentel Pocket Brush. They were much less stressful on the hand than nibs.

It’s interesting that using different tools, just like working at different sizes, changes the way you draw, creates new styles. And just keeps it interesting.

  3. Dana might also be talking about WebToons which did that earlier this year IIRC.
