Eduardo Barreto becomes new artist on Judge Parker

King Features has announced that Eduardo Barreto is the new artist for the classic serial feature “Judge Parker.”  Eduardo replaces Harold LeDoux who is retiring from the strip.

“Eduardo is the perfect choice to succeed my longtime friend and collaborator, Harold LeDoux. His professionalism and love of the art form will add a new chapter to one of America’s classic continuity strips. I know that the strip’s loyal readers will appreciate Eduardo’s work as much as I do,” says Judge Parker writer Woody Wilson.

  3. Barreto’s drawing skils lack the clearer definition of LeDoux’s. Hope he can try harder to emulate the work of LeDoux. He suffers by comparison.

One can understand the desire to assert one’s individual style in whatever artistic endeavor–however, one of the things I really liked about Judge Parker was the detail in the drawing of the characters. To remove that detail and replace it with the washed out faces that are now in place takes the character from the strip, and I will not be reading it anymore unless the detail is replaced.

    taken. I think Barreto is doing a wonderful job.
    the expressions of the characters are stunning,
    and its a refreshing change. I think its some
    of the best artwork offered in the comic strip
    market. Lets give this guy a chance! On another
    note, I wish Mr. Wilson would go back to the roots
    of “Judge Parker”, while I enjoy the Sam/Abby
    characters, I would like to see more focus on
    Judge Parker and Katherine. Bring back Ann, and
    Jeep, and continue to write about Randy.

  9. I would have to agree with Dr. Kerr. The characters look so different, it’s hard to believe they are even the same “people”. Their facial expressions, their hairstyles, their overall appearance is completely changed. I read the comics only casually and occasionally, but I did enjoy relying on old favorites that remained the same for so many years. I suppose change must come, but couldn’t they have found a cartoonist who could at least come close to the original?

  15. None of the characters look like they have for over 40 years, not even a little! The overall quality of the entire strip has decreased tremendously! Whereas the strip used to be detailed, it now appears to be “washed out” and the characters only vaguely outlined. Surely the new artist could have made the characters look something like the old ones.

  17. We do not like the recent changes to the comic strip. Sophie has lost years: she seemed to be a precocious 13 year-old; now looks like a 10 year-old. The women were different in the past, but too much alike now. Please return to the former artwork.The change of artists is very disappointing, especially since the new artwork is not the quality of the old.

  19. They can’t return to the old artwork as the artist retired. I’ve seen some things to dislike, but I’ve also seen things to like as well, but there’s inconsistency suggesting the new artist isn’t quite comfortable with it yet. The major advantage is that the new art is contemporary, and should draw more attention to the strip.

  22. It would be helpful if the characters wore name tags. I often cannot make sense of the story line because I can’t figure who is saying what. The characters look too much alike and each character seems to change day to day. I generally read all the comics but am getting less willing to look at Judge Parker.

  24. I did not even recognize the characters in the strip from 12/21/2006 as Neddy and Marie. At least make the characters look the same from day to day. I would hate to quit reading the strip because I can no longer recognize the people in it.

    This artist SUCKS!!! I won’t be reading this strip much longer. Pity. I wonder how many other people feel as we all do?? Please bring back the old look!!

I found this site after looking to see what was going on — I didn’t recognize the characters at all, and they all seem to have dropped about 10 years (even the kids look much younger) and become Marvellized. Gradual changes over time are one thing (Garfield, Calvin & Hobbes, etc.), and are even possible when the artist changes (Gasoline Alley) — and some artists are capable enough to mimic the style of the original. Sudden changes are another.

  40. I see by the comments that I am not the only one disappointed in the new artwork on Judge Parker. Since when has Marie become a freckle faced twenty year old? She’s been the maid for Abby forever! Don’t mess with the looks of the characters, please! I will have to discontinue reading this comic if it doesn’t improve.

The new artist is atrocious, and it’s getting worse. Marie doesn’t look a thing like she used to, nobody does.. didn’t this guy even take a look at previous strips before drawing????

  48. I’m having a difficult time reading one of my old favorites. The characters don’t even look like the old ones – everyone looks like a teenager! Please, let’s show at least a little respect to the identity given these characters by Mr. LeDoux. I want the old look back or at least a close resemblance.

  50. Alas, King Features seems to have joined the job out-sourcing bandwagon – so Uruguay is the new Bangaolore? I only hope the new artwork came at half-price. Not to be unkind, but it is amateurish at best. From the comments above, I’d say it’s about unanimous – it’s time for a new artist.

  52. Judge Parker has been my favorite comic for 54 years. Yes, I remember when it began in 1952…
    and I thank Harold LeDoux for the wonderfully drawn characters that became so dear to me. He deserves a happy retirement…but he cannot be replaced, as evidenced by Eduardo Barreto’s poor attempt. Sorry, guys…you have lost one of your most faithful fans!

  54. I’ve read Judge Parker every day for many years. I agree with the others who disapprove of the new artwork. I have unsuccessfully tried to accustom myself to the ‘new appearance’. I don’t understand why no attempt was made to maintain character appearance continuity as a requisite for a successful comic strip. The artwork is poor and bears absolutely no resemblence to the characters who are the comic strip. Until there is a reclamation of the artwork, I will not only not read it, but will soon recommend our newspaper no longer carry it. Sorry.

  66. To those who have been complaining about the change in art styles in Judge Parker, since Harold LeDoux retired, I have three words for you:

    GET OVER IT!

    I LOVED LeDoux’s style over the years. But, I wholeheartedly welcomed Barreto’s style, after seeing what he had done in comic books (The Shadow, Batman, Daredevil, etc). I think Eduardo was coming into his own with the characters and had done a great job them. The guy draws a great looking woman.

    Now, what happened to Barreto is extremely unfortunate. I hope he has recovered and that he can remain with Judge Parker for a long time. BUT, if he can’t, I would hope the syndicate could find someone a little more capable of drawing the characters with some respect to the past (LeDoux). Heebink, nice guy, very good artist. But, after two weeks, not really doing his homework and how the characters should’ve been drawn. His first week, the week of 12-18, he butchered Abbey Spencer and Marie, the maid. This week is a little better. Let’s hope his next two weeks improves until we get Eduardo Barreto’s return.

    Patience is a virtue. Cut Woody Wison some slack, he has to have been in some serious stress mode the last few months. I am sure he has too much respect for the strip to not make sure it gets the proper treatment.

I like the characters too much. I will say one thing. Why did Neddy change from a young woman to a child that looks like a Les Mis poster.

    The dailies for the last two weeks, and the next two weeks are being done by John Heebink.

    My guess Heebink does that few Sundays, before Barreto is back on the board.

  74. The new look is fatally bad. The characters look and appeal is as important as the story line. The appearance of the Neddy and Sophie does not even come close to their story ages. Sam is ugly. IF the look does not return to the base line then I cannot read this much longer. I am sickened by the loss of one of my favorite strips.

  76. I breathed a sigh of relief Sunday when the artwork changed back, only to find the awful artwork back again today. The look of the characters is so bad that I finally searched to see what was going on, and found this site.

    Barreto does a fine job. Heebrink makes the characters look downright ugly. While I understand that a temporary substitute had to be found while Barreto recovers, surely there was someone out there who could do better?

    Barreto does a fine job. Heebrink makes the characters look downright ugly. While I understand that a temporary substitute had to be found while Barreto recovers, surely there was someone out there who could do better?

  78. I thought I was the only one who noticed, until I did a Google search and found this page. You know, I think little Jeffy Keane does a better job of filling in on holidays for his dad in Family Circus than this new guy does on Judge Parker. I wonder if he also uses crayons?

  80. What a relief to find this website and realize that I am not the only one to have noticed the drastic change in art style. Also, that I am not the only one who is disappointed with the change in quality. I didn’t even recognize the character Marie at all.

  84. I also am glad that I found this website. Judge Parker has always been one of my favorite comics. But, the new artist has completely changed the personalities of the characters with his drawings. I hope that a new artist is found so that we can relate to the characters again.

    No disrespect to Harold LeDoux, but I am really enjoying Eduardo’s take on these characters. His style is perfect for this, he gives the strip a more modern look and feel while still staying true to the source material. Excellent stuff!

    Then again, it’s nice to see more of Eduardo’s work in print, IMHO. He has always been one of my favorite illustrators.

    In fact, King Features has been doing a great job on recruiting artistic talent. With comic book pros like Gray Morrow on Tarzan, Paul Ryan on the Phantom, Graham Nolan on Rex Morgan M.D., Gary Gianni on Prince Valiant, and now Eduardo Barreto on Judge Parker, I’d have to say King Features has a rather formidable art department at the moment.

    One exception being John Heebink’s fill-in stint on Judge Parker from mid-December to mid-January of 2007.

    Heebink tried, but failed to capture what LeDoux and Barreto had done/were/now doing with Judge Parker.

    I do agree, Barreto will hopefully take Judge Parker characters to new depths. Eduardo draws a great look woman. He does Abbey Spencer justice. No pun intended.

    I make these comments from the perspective of a retiree who has no serious financial issues and who is comfortable with his living standard.

    Jealousy of the wealthy is not a motivating factor in this statement.

    Furthermore, I realize the following opinions may not generally represent those of most of your other readers. But, there may be more agreement from other readers than we think.

    I have been reading “Judge Parker” from its inception.

    It seems to me the strip has metamorphosed into a story line about the wealthy.

    Recently, Sophie was made to say, “Isn’t it wonderful being rich?”

    Abbey recently paid–I believe–2 l/2 million for a mansion in France, being so wealthy she did not even find it necessary to consult with her husband who was back here in the states before she made this purchase. How many of us can relate to that?

    This strip has recently been an on-going story line about financial decisions and pecuniary matters which seem to have replaced the long history of plots to which we can all relate.

    I feel that you will disconnect from and lose many of your daily readers if this continues. We are in an age where jobs for the middle class are becoming more difficult to find and to hold, wages–adjusted for inflation–are down. outsourcing is taking many jobs.

    Many moms and dads have to work two jobs to maintain a good life style, or just to get by. Foreclosures are up.

    Can you please consider these matters and determine if there is not at least a grain of truth in what I say?

    I have seen a number of humorous comic strips go from very good at inception only to reach a point after a number of years where the writer seems to run out of ideas, and the strip is no longer consistently funny. I no longer read those.

    I realize your objective is not humor, but the point is folks change what they read when the product goes downhill.

Yes, I too have pretty much given up reading Judge Parker. The replacement artwork is pretty shabby and in no way comes close to comparing to the originals, which is unfortunately
    not surprising.

Why is it that the artist Eduardo Barreto displays Abby as a 19 year old female with only one rigid self image; a sexually charged creature who must wear tight fitting, anatomy revealing, Brittany Spears type clothing ? Abby’s new image is that of a immature going on forty year old women, whose only desire in life is to display her navel, buttocks and cleavage with poses that one usually finds on magazine covers at the supermarket check out line. The two adopted daughters have more emotional maturity and common sense and strong concept of what makes a modern women of the world than the adult trollop that Sam is married to
    Are we now all part of the hedonistic sex crazed culture that bombards young ladies and boys with the image of the scantly clad female as the ideal form of being NOW ? I know that this message will be as one rain drop on a sheet of tefflon.

  103. Barreto is a great improvement over LeDoux. LeDoux’s art was precise, but flat. Cardboard cutouts is the phrase that comes to mind. Barreto understands depth, lighting and camera angles much better than LeDoux ever did. His mastery of brush pressure and contouring of the figures is classic. Yay.

I have noticed as of very late that they have taken a decided turn toward enabling the breaking of God’s commandments, judgements, statutes, and ordinances. Amen
