Tank McNaMarmaduke

Didn’t notice it on yesterday’s Marmaduke, but it was a bit more obvious today.

Marmaduke by Paul and Brad Anderson and “Hinds”

The kids in today’s Marmaduke looked familiar but not Marmaduke familiar. And checking them out there was a noticeable difference in the signature. A “Hinds” was added Sunday and Monday and those kids look suspiciously Cleats-y.

But still… it wasn’t the regular Bill Hinds signature. Yet… Bill Hinds and Paul Anderson are brothers in The Lone Star Chapter of the National Cartoonists Society.

The only thing to do was to put the question to the Tank McNamara cartoonist himself.

Hinds confirms (thanks Bill!) that he has indeed joined the Marmaduke team. Noting that the big dog Marmaduke has been redrawn by Paul Anderson to remain on model (a practice of cartoonists and their assistants from Milton Caniff to Al Capp and beyond).

So Marmaduke stats now include Bill Hinds from October 5, 2025 forward.

  1. Bill Hinds offered me some
one-on-one advice about cartoon formatting and layout, when I was living in Houston, years and years ago.

Still an aspiring cartoonist, I continue to be grateful for the time and advice he offered me and how he personified the cartoonist community; supportive, generous and informative.

  2. Just checked the Texas Cartoonists site, and with the names shown, these names ring a bell to me besides Anderson and Hinds:
    Scott Hilburn (Argyle Sweater)
    Hector Cantu (Baldo)
Rob Harrell (former Big Top and Lucky Cow comic strip artist)

  3. Check out Michael Fry, a Texas Cartoonist, who is still publishing Over The Hedge in GoComics.

Absent from the list though is
Berkeley Breathed, Buddy Hickerson and Shannon Wheeler.

Did I forget a prominent Texas cartoonist?

  4. Yeah, Clay Jones.

    Speedy recovery Clay!

    Ric
