Recognize! I’ve Seen That Before – Updated

A few cartoonists of late have paid tribute to the giants that preceded them. For example:

Lalo Alcaraz doing Jack Kirby.

Michael de Adder does Joe Shuster.

Dan Piraro memorializes Ernie Bushmiller

Lalo Alcaraz, again, riffing on Gary Larson.

And RJ Matson reworks Norman Rockwell.

Finally Berkeley Breathed interrupts his The Bloom County Boys for a throwback to Bloom County 2021 where he does a “Whatever Happened to…” with Bill Watterson characters.

  1. This article is cool because it shows how modern cartoonists pay respects to the classics. Its great seeing these homages, and I love how diverse the influences are from Kirby to Rockwell. Definitely inspires me!

  2. I like when cartoonists treat homages as a kind of Easter egg for readers to discover. I appreciate Dave Brown citing his sources, because he riffs (in spendid detail) on some relatively obscure great art that I wouldn’t know without the citation, but I don’t think you need to say “apologies to Leonardo da Vinci” if you’re doing a takeoff on the Mona Lisa.
