I ran into Steve Artley at the Billy Ireland last month and told him I wished he hadn’t quit doing political cartoons about a year earlier, to which he responded that I was in luck, because he was starting back up again. And so he has.A boatload of cartoonists have done Scrooge cartoons this holiday […]
Exquisite timing — I spotted Pat Oliphant’s take while my Facebook feed was filling with commentary from SA friends watching the funeral. I disagree only with the universal sense of unpreparedness he suggests, but I’m going to interpret it as a combination of shock and grief rather than a genuine expression of incapacity. There was a […]
Tom Tomorrow with a chatty but point-on commentary about the health care issue.Speaking of JFK (and isn’t everyone?), he used to quote an aphorism, “success has many fathers, failure is an orphan,” and the piling on over the botched roll-out of a main portion of the Affordable Care Act has certainly been a stunning example […]
Jim Morin’s cartoon amuses me, but it also depresses me.We’re at a point where negativity is gaining an edge, and health care is only a portion of the issue.Thing is, he’s absolutely right. But … well, yeah, he’s right, and what the hell difference is it going to make?I mean, if talk radio hosts and […]
Joe Martin doesn’t do political cartoons, but today’s Willie ‘n Ethel pretty much sums up the current situation and does it better than the “on the one hand, on the other” political cartoonists who simply repeat the same tired “Congress sucks” blame-sharing cartoons. We are media prisoners of the moronically “even-handed” approach to coverage ably […]
I always like Tom the Dancing Bug’s Super-Fun-Pak Comix, but I particularly like the sidebar of garbage served up with this installment.Fact is, I was hoping that somebody would post a cartoon today that was light and breezy and funny and would get me off the political kick for a bit. In part because, when I […]
Tom the Dancing Bug, with such a complete takedown of Scalia’s comments during arguments for the Voting Rights Act case that I’ve got little to add, except that I hope we get a couple of SC resignations after the current session, or at least before we get a change in the White House.Early would be […]
While newspapers fight for audience by removing all traces of uniqueness, character and community from their pages — this past week, the Record (no longer “The Bergen Record”) laid off editorial cartoonist Jimmy Margulies after 22 years — the late cartooning legend Herblock continues to support the form with an award each year from the […]
Granted, Tom Tomorrow isn’t likely to highlight the happy, cheerful elements of 2012. As a social critic, he’s sort of locked into a fairly negative format. But I think the world could have made him work a little harder, don’t you? That is, a person looking for rotten things to write about can always find plenty of […]
Daryl Cagle on the wall-to-wall coverage of the Newtown shootings. I agree, and I disagree. That is, the tragedy was certainly news, and, while I don’t much like vultures, I’m not a big fan of ostriches, either. In the old Soviet Union, they didn’t report on airplane crashes and other tragedies because they didn’t consider one-time odd […]
Tom Tomorrow, an endangered species, on the recent debates. But, y’know, not recent enough. We want the truth and we want it right now, but, if we have to choose, we’ll take “right now.”So the consulate in Benghazi is attacked, and the first report is that a mob got out of control, stormed the place and killed […]
Doonesbury decries the lack of information available in the Information Society. There’s plenty of information, of course, but you have to go look for it, which, even for a dedicated info-scrounger, is not so easy. Even Google News is driven by what other people think is worth knowing, and so, while it’s a pretty good resource, […]
Meecy-micey, atsa some big cartoon, dere, Tom Tomorrow. All those panels and not a clunker in the group. (This might be a good time to remind you that you can click on the image for a larger version.)I’ve got nothing to add. He covered it all. And any one of these panels could have been […]
Tom Tomorrow probes the lack of substance behind Paul Ryan’s declared passion for Ayn Rand. Ryan has said that “Atlas Shrugged” is required reading for his staff, and he has given people copies of the book as Christmas presents, an improbable choice of ways to celebrate the Lord’s birth that readily plays into the “say […]
Tom Tomorrow on inevitability and futility.I’m not 100 percent sure this message of passivity is being preached so much by “experts,” however, because I’m no longer sure who the “experts” are anymore, and I don’t think that’s because of my being out of the loop. I am out of the loop, however, to the extent of […]
