When we were reading Hamlet in college junior year, the professor asked the purpose of the gravedigger scene. We went around the seminar table talking about comic relief and the need to ease the tension and onward and so forth and the wisdom flowed like fine wine. Then he pointed out that Shakespeare was maintaining a […]
An hour? Holy catfish! Caulfield’s got a way longer attention span than I do. My limit for sitting listening to anything on my computer is about four minutes. As for selfie-podcasts, my limit for looking at a close-up of somebody’s big fat face delivering a rant is zero minutes. The counter-benefit of ADD is that I […]
This took me a minute, after which I felt foolish for having not gotten it right away. There is no relationship so genuinely wonderful that Maeve cannot screw it up. Between Friends doesn’t provide a lot of belly laughs; the humor is more a sigh of recognition at human frailty, and regular readers know the inevitable […]
I’m always surprised when I stumble across one of those Captchas that wants you to click on picture boxes. It’s like getting into a car and realizing it has a choke, except that you never get into a car with a choke unless you’re at an antique car show. Which is to say, it’s like […]
Sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground, and I’m kind of surprised that anybody had time to respond, given that Dear Leader pulled the plug at two in the afternoon, so we’ll give some other cartoonists a chance to catch up.And speaking of catch-up, we’re in good hands, because our Secretary of […]
Time for our weekly trip to Arcamax. Monotonous, isn’t it? Well, it sure gets old, given that somebody keeps forgetting to load the black plate for Barney & Clyde on Sundays, but, then again, if all they loaded were the black plate, that would be monotonous. What they’re doing instead is polytonous. However, today it seems […]
This is as political as I plan to get today. I’m awash in political cartoons with sarcastic responses to Musk’s demand that people tell five things they accomplished last week, mostly showing Trump filling out the form and varying from okay to more than okay but only a couple reaching brilliant.Ali Solomon, however, frames it […]
The doctor is correct: There’s a lot of bad news going on and not a lot of good news, and all sorts of mostly depressing things to cartoon about. The problem is that the political cartoons don’t have much impact if you don’t pause once in awhile. So here we are, and I’d remind you that […]
This Buckets (AMS) is as close to the Washpo/LATimes thing as I’m getting today. As I wrote yesterday, I’m impressed that the Post has allowed so much pushback from staff, so it’s pretty clear that nobody in the front office feels they speak for the CEO.OTOH, I’m somewhat confounded by all the calls not to […]
“Have you seen them?”I have an appetite for dumb jokes and Matt Percival offers an excellent example, because people losing their glasses on their foreheads is a very old gag with little potential, while dogs digging up the yard searching for buried bones is ditto, but when you put them together … well, it’s not […]
Just a quick reminder from Madam & Eve that not everyone is starting to anticipate winter. We’ve just hit apple-picking season up here and winter can’t be far behind, but for those on the opposite side of the Equator, it’s nearly spring.I’ll be pleased when the pollen ends up here, and, oddly enough, happy if […]
We’re going to take a little break from politics today, while I recover from having spent the past week banging my head on the desk. Like the grandfather in The Buckets (AMS), I’ve been sparring with my computer and various online entities. Both the motherboard and hard drive on my desktop are in hospice, but I […]
Day by Dave (AMS) reminds us that today is National Tattoo Removal Day, and I suppose the way you react to that information could be an indication of your age. Whamond’s gag assumes a relationship between alcohol consumption, getting a tattoo and regret. The question isn’t whether that pattern exists. Of course it does. The […]
Barbara Smaller’s cartoon is hardly breakthrough humor, subconsciously echoing as it does a Tom Toro piece that has become a classic:It is odd that they both ran in the New Yorker. As an editor, I certainly would have recognized the repetitive nature and declined to run the second iteration.OTOH, if I were editing somewhere else, […]
Not feeling all that political today, but I got a laff out of Tommy Siegel‘s piece because it coincides with a sudden deluge of similarly dismissive editorial cartoons explaining that, despite all evidence to the contrary, those darned college kids are all anti-Semites, including the Jewish demonstrators.I don’t mind it coming from the usual suspects, […]
