It’s probably a mistake to lead off with the funniest editorial cartoon of the day, perhaps the week, perhaps more, but Bill Bramhall knocked me out my chair with this. There is a load of brilliance in this simple drawing.Anybody could have drawn Trump with his hand in the cookie jar, and perhaps have brought into […]
I’ll break the suspense: It’s “we.”It goes back to that thing about how most Indian tribes got their names from neighbors, while, in their own language, they basically called themselves “the people.”Which worked then, but, in a diverse community, a phrase like, “We, the people,” is more apt to mislead than to instruct.Anyway, let’s check […]
Let’s set a bit of a holiday mood with Barney & Clyde, which has always had a bit of a Frank Capra tone. The difference is that the cartoon strip appears every day and Capra worked in an era in which most movies were self-contained and had finite endings. There was no “It’s Still A Wonderful […]
It’s no particular secret to Constant Readers that I’m a fan of Ann Telnaes, but when, quite some time ago, she began to simply add stacks to her “Nothingburger” cartoon base, I felt she was overplaying the concept. However, I may have missed the value of patience and of a sort of quiet relentlessness. This piece […]
Now that I’ve planted that nasty earworm, I’ll send you off to see the rest of this week’s Mo, which is always a pleasure but this week particularly apt.I’ve never been one of those people who hates Mondays, in part because I’ve had jobs I liked, in which case going to work was fine with […]
Non Sequitur lays it out, and I have no argument with Wiley’s analysis.Because, yeah, I have a lot of arguments. Nick Anderson says much the same as Wiley, though in a slightly different tone: Trump never got his wall on the southern border, but he’s managed to build one through the heart of the country.I’ve said […]
So it’s come to this: Rob Rogers lays out the new rationale for canceling someone’s vote.Because he’s lost his mind. Because he believes a man who lies so often that his greatest success as a “job creator” has been in the area of fact checking. But, of course, that’s part of Trump’s game.By constantly accusing the […]
Paul Fell notes the futility of “Moments of Silence” followed by “Months of Inaction,” which puts his piece head-and-shoulders above the multitude of “We’re So Sad” cartoons currently out there. There are times when all you can say is “We’re So Sad,” and editorial cartoonists have an obligation to mirror those moments for the nation or, […]
It may seem odd, with all the horrors of the past week, to start today with Rick McKee‘s lottery cartoon, but the lottery is not only another way in which We The People exploit the gullibility of our fellow citizens but it is too often a good example of how the media helps in the […]
Today is Hump Day, not because it’s Wednesday but because the President has asked us all to believe that there are scary brown Muslims headed our way from Honduras, mixed in with the scary brown Latinos. We’ll know them because SBLs ride on burros but SBMs ride on camels.Joe Heller‘s cartoon suggests that this delusion is […]
(Tom Toles)(Ann Telnaes)Let’s start the day with an all-WashPo Juxtaposition.I will confess, I gave up on Bob Woodward’s “Fear” about a third of the way through. As noted here before, it felt rushed, with a lot of incidents but without a unifying thread, which doesn’t make for engrossing reading. But it does start with the Hidden […]
Ann Telnaes gets it absolutely right on a level that hits me personally, and perhaps it’s a chance to talk about the system, because I’m sure tired of talking about the issue. For about a year and a half, I edited a small, twice-weekly community paper in western Maine.Back in 2006-8, Maine had two Senators noted […]
So here we are, and, as Jim Morin notes, we’ve even had an FBI investigation of the latest charges against Brett Kavanaugh, which was conducted along the same lines as the administration uses in exploring environmental science: Round up the stuff that supports your position and avoid the parts that don’t.Which would just be liberal […]
I expected Rob Rogers‘ session — the second of two “Cartooning in the Age of Trump” presentations at CXC — to be the highlight of my weekend, and it was. The above two panels from his 24-panel Nib cartoon, “I Was Fired For Criticizing Trump,” which ran in July, provide an insight into why. Some cartoonists […]
(Arlo and Janis)(Real Life Adventures)So, yes, it’s autumn, as Arlo notes, though, as Real Life Adventures counters, not so’s you’d notice. The important thing around here is that we want a spectacular autumn and it’s a crap shoot each year.Sometimes, it’s just kind of blah. Sometimes, just as it’s looking really good, there’s a storm that […]
